While the country of Belize is targeted for tourism boycott due to its record as the worst human trafficking violator in Central America, the Town of San Pedro has been designated by ORT as a red flag no-go zone for tourists.
Local officials, including police, are complicit in the exploitation of human trafficking for the purposes of prostitution, resulting in the ORT red flag for San Pedro.
“For all responsible tourists, the Town of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize cannot be a travel destination, said ORT President Vivian Trill. “Until Mayor Paz is investigated and human trafficking addressed in San Pedro, we pledge to alert all travelers to avoid Belize, and in particular this human trafficking town. Until further notice, this town remains a red flag no-go zone for tourists.” ORT promotes traveling for a better world.
