Belizeans for Justice Founder and Director Yolanda Schakron has demanded the end of corruption and incompetence within the Belize Police Department. More specifically, she has called for the resignation of Belize Police Commissioner Crispin Jeffries.
ORT established and maintains the campaign to stop human trafficking in Belize. It is throwing the weight of its global online movement behind Belizeans for Justice. It is also asking its global network, comprising thousands of supporters around the world, to demand from Belize Attorney General Bernard Q Pitts assurance for the safety of these brave women.
Recently, Belizeans for Justice members held a news conference in the face of death threats to themselves and their families. At the conference, many courageous women told stories of how they and their families were harmed, harassed or neglected by the police.
Some episodes involved direct harm from the police. These include accounts of police shooting innocent citizens with no investigation following. For example, a construction worker shot in May by police, with no investigation or promised assistance forthcoming. Others told of how, as crime victims, they found no support or investigative action from authorities. One example is a grandmother’s description of how her 8-year-old grandson was shot and killed in gun cross fire, with no investigation by police.
“These women remain unbroken and outspoken,” said Trill. “The ORT campaign and Belizeans for Justice have common cause in targeting Belize corruption at the highest levels. We ask Attorney General Pitts to fire Commissioner Jeffries as a first step in overhauling the corrupt, incompetent and under-funded Belize Police Department.”
In further a further demonstration of solidarity with Belizeans for Justice, Trill offered the organization technical support for development of its website and deployment of social media. Trill invited Belizeans for Justice to contact ORT via takenwomen@gmail.com for technical or other assistance.
ORT promotes traveling for a better world.
