Vivian Trill - John McAfee
The Organization for Responsible Tourism continues to ring the same bell as John McAfee: international media, we urge you to scrutinize Belize government corruption with your most investigative lens. In calling for international attention via news media to Belize corruption McAfee aims at two purposes: one, deliberately personal; the other a general side benefit to current and future victims of Belize government corruption. Let's look first a McAfee's personal strategy in taking flight and exhorting media investigation of the Dean Barrow regime. If/when McAfee either turns himself in or otherwise comes into the hands of the Belize authorities, every hair on his head will be counted, his safety ensured due to international attention. If the man stubs his toe while being questioned, there would be an international outcry. So, effectively, John McAfee is now hiding in plain sight. Let's look now at the second outcome an intense media review of the Belize government and its justice system would achieve. For example, such a review would reveal that most people held on remand, awaiting bail hearing for example, along with those sentenced are sent to Belize's notorious Hattieville Prison, cited by Amnesty International for its corrupt and inhuman treatment of prisoners. That would only be the start many stories of Belize government corruption. Friend of the Organization for Responsible Tourism, James Fredrick Jensen, knows first hand the perils of not paying the right people, of being set up and then enduring remand in Hattieville Prison, all on trumped up charges that were later dismissed. His life is in danger, still hunted by people the Belize government continues to help. Whatever John McAfee's state of mind or involvement in the murder of fellow expat George Faull, we hope his strategy to ensure his own safety through media attention works. We also hope there is enough spill-over news media attention to Belize corruption so that other victims are spared.Vivian Trill is the president of the Organization for Responsible Tourism. She is an IT specialist, leading a team with advanced technical skills on the Campaign to Stop Human Trafficking in Belize. She has experience in the Central American underground that hunts and recovers human trafficking victims and returns them to their families.
